Internal medicine is the specialty of medicine concerning the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases in adults, especially of internal organs. General Physicians are Doctors of Internal Medicine (General Medicine) also referred to as, including "general internists" and "doctors of internal medicine."

They deal with the essentials of primary care internal medicine which incorporates an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health and effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and reproductive organs.

General physicians practice medicine from a primary care perspective, but they also treat and manage many ailments and are the most adept at treating a broad range of diseases affecting adults. Internal medicine super-specialists also practice general internal medicine, but focus their practice on their particular specialty like cardiology or pulmonology.

Physicians are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings -- no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They especially deal with solving puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time.

The department provides broad range of services for diagnosis and treatment of multiple adult medical problems, including- Critical care, Management of chronic diseases involving multi-system, Management of drug overdoses & poisoning, Environmental diseases which include diseases due to Industrial chemical exposure, drowning, electrical injuries, radiation injuries, animal bites are treated under the department of Internal medicine.

Infectious diseases are a major problem in our country. It includes Malaria, Typhoid fever, Tuberculosis, HIV, Dengue fever etc. Most of these diseases present with fever & general symptoms, which are investigated in depth & treated. Sometimes times these diseases present as Septicaemia & shock.

Pre-operation checks :

Senior consultant of department of internal medicine are involved in preoperative checks in addition to anaesthetists assessment to manage &pick up existing medical problem prior to surgical procedures as well as to take appropriate measures prior to surgeries. Often consultants are required to manage medical problems coexisting with surgical conditions. Preoperatively, post operatively & during intra operation period. Super-specialists are also called in whenever required.
