Padeatrics & Neonatology
Pediatrics & Neonatology is
the speciality of medicine dealing with medical care of infants and
children. Pediatrics differs from adult medicine in many respects. The
smaller body of an infant or neonate is substantially different
physiologically from that of an adult. Congenital defects, genetic variance,
and a host of other issues are of greater concern to pediatricians and
neonatologists than they often are to adult physicians.

Some diseases, are more often treated by pediatricians because only recently
did the majority of these patients survive into adulthood. Issues revolving
around infectious diseases and immunizations are also dealt with by
pediatricians. Put simply, treating a child is not like treating a miniature
adult, it is this that paediatricians and neonatologists specialize in.
Childhood is the period of greatest growth, development and maturation of
the various organ systems in the body. Years of training and experience,
besides medical training, goes into recognizing the difference between
normal variants and what is actually pathological.

Saifee
Hospital’s Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology is a well-equipped and
well-staffed department. The Pediatric Ward contains a 7-bedded general ward
and 2 twin-sharing rooms. The environment caters to the requirement of the
children - flashy and playful so that the ill child feels fresh and lively.
The ward resembles a room at home and there is a children’s play area which
has a large collection of child-safe toys, a wall-mounted plasma TV set with
an attached VCD player that may be used to entertain the children. The
entire pediatric ward is child-friendly and exudes an environment i.e.
soothing and calm. This is very essential for sick children. An environment
that has a positive effect on their minds, speeds up the natural healing
process. All the nurses in the department have been chosen for their
excellent nursing skills, as well as the love and respect they have towards
children.
Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit

In addition
to the above ward, the department also has a state-of-the-art Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit, or the NICU, inside the Maternity Wing. This special
care unit is staffed by senior trained nurses and doctors. The unit has
ventilators, warmer-integrated phototherapy and EEG and ECG services, plus
all the paraphernalia needed to look after preterm and sick newborns.
